Fix Fallout 4 bugs glitches and errors

Fallout 4 Steam PC Bug Fixes

Like any Bethesda game, Fallout 4 launched with it’s fair share of bugs and glitches across all platforms. Luckily for PC owners, the community was able to come up with a list of fixes and workarounds relatively quickly. Plenty of people were able to play the game without any issues. In my personal experience, the game was locked at 20 FPS which rendered it unplayable. I stumbled across this handy guide from Gabi of the Steam Fallout 4 community. Making minor edits to the game’s setting files allowed me to unlock the frame-rate in Fallout 4. We’ll continue to edit and update this page as more bug fixes, glitches and workarounds are uncovered in Fallout 4.

Table of contents:

  1. Unlock Frame Rate
  2. Adjust Field-of-View (FOV)
  3. Unlock Console
  4. Ultra-Wide (21:9) Support

If your launch experience was like mine, you may have noticed that for some strange reason the game was locked at 20 FPS. To unlock frame rate in Fallout 4:

  • To unlock frame rate open Fallout4Pref.ini (located at C:\Users\[name]\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\)
  • Search for the line iPresentInterval=1, and change it to iPresentInterval=0
  • OPTIONAL: To use vSync in Fallout 4 navigate to your nVidia or AMD control panel and adjust application settings appropriately

For some, the default FOV settings in Fallout 4 are nauseatingly close. Note: This requires changes to three files, there are two files called Fallout4Prefs.ini in two different locations and one called Fallout4.ini, all three need to be changed as below. Please note the FOV changes have to be a multiple of 10 otherwise this will not work. To adjust to a wider field-of-view:

Navigate to your Fallout4.ini (located at C:\Users\[name]\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\) and under [Display] enter the fixes below:

  • fDefaultWorldFOV=XX
  • fDefault1stPersonFOV=YY
    • XX is your third-person FOV setting
    • YY is your first-person FOV setting
      • Gabi recommends a setting of 90 or 100 (must use multiples of 10) to be desireable for most Fallout 4 players

Next, go to the Fallout4Prefs.ini and do the same fix as above (C:\Users\[name]\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\), under [Display] put:

  • fDefaultWorldFOV=XX
  • fDefault1stPersonFOV=YY
    • Use the same numbers for XX and YY as you used above

Next, navigate to the directory where Steam is installed and open: steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Fallout4 (a folder called Fallout 4 is in another folder called Fallout4).

  • Open the Fallout4Prefs.ini here and once again under [Display] add the below:
    • fDefaultWorldFOV=XX
    • fDefault1stPersonFOV=YY
      • Use the same numbers for XX and YY as you used above
  • Finally, you will need to adjust your gun models and Pip-Boy. If you find your Pip-Boy to be too small, press ~, then type fov XX, where XX is a smallish number if you want it to be larger on screen and vice versa. This will take same trial and error like the FOV to get what you like.
  • Next type: refreshini, doing so will make it so your game will not revert to the default 80 FOV
  • Press ~
  • Save your game and from that point on you should be good to go!

Some users have reported issues in not being able to use the tilde (~) key to access the Fallout 4 console and enter commands. To fix this, it has been reported that people have had success with switching their keyboard layout to US.

To unlock the console:

  • Go to Control Panel
  • Select Languages
  • Set Keyboard Layout as US

To have Fallout 4 run in 21:9 without issue simply open Fallout4Prefs.ini in your documents (C:\Users\[name]\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\), and change the following lines to what you see below:

For border-less windowed mode:

  • bTopMostWindow=1
  • bMaximizeWindow=1
  • bBorderless=1
  • bFull Screen=0
  • iSize H=XXXX
  • iSize W=YYYY

Where XXXX is whatever your vertical resolution is and YYYY is whatever your horizontal resolution is

For fullscreen mode:

  • bTopMostWindow=0
  • bMaximizeWindow=0
  • bBorderless=0
  • bFull Screen=1
  • iSize H=1080
  • iSize W=2560

Where XXXX is whatever your vertical resolution is aand YYYY is whatever your horizontal resolution is.

Do the same fix for the second Fallout4Prefs.ini located in your Steam installation directory then steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Fallout 4

Stay tuned to as we’ll continue to update this page as more bugs, glitches, fixes and workarounds are discovered in Fallout 4
